The most competitive matches are held at the Estadio Gov. Magalhaes Pinto, or “Big Mineiro Stadium.” The stadium was built way back in 1965 and named after governor Magalhaes Pinto. Currently, it is the largest football stadium in all of Minas Gerais. When it opened, over 73,000 attended to form a roaring, high-spirited crowd in celebration. It is widely believed that the stadim held over 132,000 people in the epic 1997 duel between Vila Nova and Cruzeiro. So while the paid attendance was just a shade over 74,000, the actual headcount revealed some 56,000 women and children who had gotten in in for free. This packed house, however, was a short-lived phenomenon. The local authorities feared for the safety of the structure and have gradually reduced its lawful capacity. The most recent ruling came in 2004, when FIFA reduced the stadium's capacity to 72,000 people.
Three very important teams have held their Belo Horizonte football matches in Big Mineiro stadium. The America Mineiro, Atletico Mineiro, and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube have all held legendary, high-intensity contests at the stadium, each with its own memories indelibly left on all those who attended.
Of the three clubs, Atletico Mineiro has attracted the most people to the stadium. By 2002, it was estimated that Atletico had drawn over twenty million spectators to watch its games over the years across 1,011 matches.. Cruzeiro clocks in at a close second, having drawn nineteen million spectators across 1,062 matches. There have also been numerous derbies, or football festivals throughout the years that these statistics do not reflect.
It is still possible to see a Belo Horizonte football match at the stadium. All you must do is visit the stadium's box office for a schedule of games to be played and ticket prices for each one. Then it's just a matter of finding a good seat and settling down with your favorite snacks for some heart-pumping football intensity!
