Behold The Natural Exhibits of the Belo Horizonte Zoo!

The Belo Horizonte zoo is a must-see for any nature lover on your trip. If you are looking to see the wonders of Brazilian nature, both animal and inanimate, this is the place to be. But first, let's learn a little bit about the history of the zoo and what you can find there.

The grounds that currently house the zoo were originally meant to host the Golf Club. However, plans fell through when it was determined by the Golf committee that more room would be needed for their purposes. At that time, the Foundation Zoo-Botany of Belo Horizonte was established by the Heritage Institute, in 1994. However, the history of the zoo extends much further back than that.

The Belo Horizonte zoo has been around since 1959 to preserve the natural habitats of several endangered species and popular tourist attraction animals. In addition to showcasing various animals, the zoo also has a significant part of its budget devoted to education; this ranges from environmental awareness to endangered animals to habitat destruction. All visitors to the zoo are given the opportunity to read and take home various pamphlets and brochures about the zoo's activism projects.

As for the zoo itself, it is home to over 1200 animals, spanning more than 240 distinct species of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds. The zoo prides itself on displaying animals from all five continents in the world, not just South America. That means that eco-minded travelers on your trip can visit this one zoo and bear witness to the best wildlife from all over the world!

One of the animals on display at the Belo Horizonte zoo is the toucan, one of Brazil's most exotic birds. Foreign tourists will recognize the toucan as the cartoon mascot of popular American cereal Fruit Loops.

However, there is much more to zoo than just animals. Several themed gardens and greenhouses put the breathtaking natural beauty of Brazil's flowers and vegetation on display for all to see. Here, visitors can fawn over bromelias, medicinal flowers, araceas, and succulent plants from all around Brazil. The Atlantic, Rupestre, and Savanna are just of the few of the greenhouses that give tourists a peek at authentic Brazilian ponds and plants. In addition, guided tours show visitors the production of seedling in-depth and step-by-step. It is a fascinating experience for anyone with an interest in nature.
